Designing a Unit

Poetry can be a hard subject to teach. Whether that's because students find it boring or it's hard to plan for doesn't really matter, the fact is that it's tough to teach. That being said, Amanda Cardenas has come up with a way to plan an article that is simple and quick. She has even created some wonderful handouts, graphics, and lessons that she has posted up for free.
The article breaks down how to build a poetry unit. The first step is identifying the targets, meaning decide on which of the common core standards to teach.
The next step is look at choosing how to analyze the poem. The graphic shown on the article is fantastic. It's a fleshed-out version of the big six method of poetry and has fantastic details as it breaks them down and provides questions to start a discussion.
Then the article moves on to a way to select poems, Amanda has also provided a list of contemporary poets and a list of female poets to use in the classroom along with Robert Frost and other male poets.
The last thing to mention is to have the students write! Allow them to experiment with writing poetry. Yes, it's probably going to be terrible but they'll have fun with it.

You can find the article here.
